Will this become this? Venice’s Piazza San Marco is in need of restoration but can’t foot the bill. To help fund the project, Venice may resort to electronic advertising billboards, much like those adorning our beautiful Times Square.
The plan, yet to be officially approved, calls for five screens, each measuring about 2,500 square feet, to be hung on scaffolding throughout the square. Sad times.
Eugh. Horrid. I love Venice with a passion but avoid San Marco at all costs. It has been destroyed by hundreds of thousands of tourists who’s only taste of Venice is the pedestrian carpark between the Doge’s Palace and Rialto bridge.
I’d much rather meander through Dorsoduro and the Giudecca, avoiding the tourists and sipping a Prosecco, before taking in the best view of the city from the campanile of San Giorgio Maggiore.
