A new theme
Hopefully you’ve noticed the new theme. This is very much still an alpha version so apologies if it breaks for you. Look out for more changes to come… as soon as I have my CSS up to speed. Coming from almost nothing it’s been a steep learning curve!

Boss: What's your password? I want to sign in and test the new system we set up.
Office gal: 'Detonate.'
Boss: [Silence.]
Office gal: What? I like typing 'Detonate' and hitting 'Enter'! It's extremely satisfying!
I've always wanted, but never had the courage to have, in the same vein, 'Global Thermonuclear War' as a password or username a la [Wargames](http: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarGames) (1982)

French Trader was forced to work 30 hours a week →
The Daily Mash reports: FRIENDS of rogue trader Jerome Kerviel last night blamed his $7 billion losses on unbearable levels of stress brought on by a punishing 30 hour week. … Kerviel was known to start work as early as nine in the morning and still be at his desk at five or even five-thirty, often with just an hour and a half for lunch. … As the losses mounted, Kerviel...

Moving house
You may have notices that I’m now tumblogging from http://adamjtaylor.tumblr.com as opposed, old, http://ajt23.tumblr.com. This is all part of a slow effort to move away from my old ajt23 moniker based upon my university username. Being on placement this year and with only one year left at Bath when I return it seems sensible to move to something slightly more obvious when it comes to...

Inside Time Machine →
This insightful and detailed essay from AppleInsider delves into the inner workings of Mac OS X Leopard’s backup facility. The concept of multiple hard links, whilst initially confusing (think of parallel universes on your drive), provides an ingenious way to give the appearance of a full backup whilst only requiring the transfer of new files. It’s a elegant system although I’m...

Back to the future
Time Machine has just set off on its first backup run. 62.83Gb to a freshly made 200Gb (ish) partition on my external hard drive. I’ve heard on the grapevine that you want a time machine drive capacity of 2-3 times that of the source. With a measly 80Gb inside my MacBook that gives me a 2.5x ratio slap bang in the middle of the recommended zone. There’s a story in the reason for the...

Light years at light speed
This evening I finally installed Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard on my MacBook. In the ten or fifteen minutes I’ve had to play so far I’m struck, more than anything, by the lightening speed of the thing. My humble 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 1Gb RAM simply flies! On top of this, Quick Look, Cover Flow in the finder, along with all the Core Animation goodness make 10.5 a quantum leap from 10.4.
